The current homework #LMPC015 is on the theme backlighting. When used correctly, backlighting can be used to improve your photography and enhance the overall composition.

Each session we encourage members to practice the skills discussed during the club meeting and prefer to see new images submitted, rather than old stock images.

3 Types of Backlighting to Improve your Photography

As with any photographic technique, there are pros and cons. Whilst it can add depth, drama, and aesthetically pleasing effects to images, it can be tricky to master. It isn’t an effect that can be used in every instance and the key is recognising how the light can assist your session. Another big hurdle to master is exposure, trying to get the correct exposure for the subject and the background can be very difficult (and sometimes near impossible), so understanding exposure fundamentals on your camera is essential.

Through Lighting

This is when the subject is translucent in nature hence the light shines through it. Some typical examples include leaves and flowers.

Rim lighting

This is when light causes a halo or outline effect on the subject. Often used in portrait and still life photography.

Silhouette

This occurs when the subject/foreground is in total contrast to the background, commonly used during sunsets/sunrises for people, and landscape photography.
